LIMITED EDITION JOHN HAINES BROADSIDES

Limited editions John Haines broadsides, autographed by the author.  Proceeds to the John Haines/49 Writers Poetry Fund, to benefit Synergies and other opportunities for Alaska's poets.  Donated by Tom Sexton.

John Haines served as Alaska’s first Poet Laureate from 1969-1974. He came to the state in 1947 to homestead near Richardson and paint. After his paints froze, his birth as a poet began. At his death in March 2011 he had published more than a dozen collections of poems and essays and won numerous awards and fellowships. Although he knew Alaska’s trails and moods from years of living above the Tanana, he was more than a regional writer and was held in high regard within and outside of Alaska.

49 Writers is pleased to offer for sale limited editions of broadsides of two early poems that first appeared in Winter News (Wesleyan, 1966).

On the Road

It is not good to be poor.
It is good to listen to the wind,

but not when you stand
alone on a road at night
with all your winter parcels,
like a mailbox waiting for
a postman who will never arrive.

The wind comes in carloads,
and goes by with a rushing
of lights and emptiness.

I think only of my home.
I have a pair of slippers for a wife
whose bare feet are waiting.

There is a light through the trees –
it is only a simple place,
with two souls strung together
by nerves and poverty.

It is not good to be poor –
and there are no coins in the wind.

“Poem of the Forgotten” – from Winter News (1966)

This 10” x 12” broadside was printed by Don Bixler for Raven Magazine  in April 1999 when John Haines gave readings from his poetry in Anchorage and Fairbanks. The readings were funded in part by The Alaska Humanities Forum. Printed on ivory with bottom deckle and beaded embossing on right margin. Signed by the author.

Prints 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 83, 85,86, 88, and 89 of 100

Poem of the Forgotten

I came to this place,
a young man green and lonely.

Well quit of the world,
I framed a house of moss and timber,
called it a home,
and sat in the warm evenings
singing to myself as a man sings
when he knows there is no one to hear.

I made my bed under the shadow
of leaves, and awoke
in the first snow of autumn,
filled with silence.

                   ~ John Haines
