Anchorage Remembers is now accepting submissions

Later this year, 49 Writers will publish an anthology of personal stories written by Municipality of Anchorage residents, 50 years and older, who have memories of Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River over the years to share with the community. In February and March, we offered a series of free memoir-writing workshops in various locations to help eligible residents to craft their stories for submission. We encourage everyone who participated in a workshop to submit their work! If you have a story but did not attend a workshop, we are happy to consider your submission too.

Click here for more information and to submit.

Imagine an Alaska firmly established on the literary map as a dynamic creative community. It has started to happen: Alaskan authors appear on the New York Times bestseller lists, or win the Whiting Writers Award, or get listed as finalists for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. All in a state where writers of diverse cultures and backgrounds come together to learn, develop, and share their common interests. That's the Alaska that 49 Writers envisions. Why not get involved at this exciting time when our state is growing as a place that nurtures emerging writers, while gaining national respect as a home to literary excellence?

Hone Your Creative Writing Skills

Christine Byl classWe offer affordable creative writing classes of interest to writers at all levels—beginning, intermediate, and advanced. So whether you are just starting out or have already published, you will find a topic on the 49 Writers schedule that meets your needs. Perhaps you want to delve into some element of craft, such as sentence structure or character development. Or you might have reached the point where you need to dig into serious revision. Maybe you're looking for inspiration from a special topic like spiritual writing or the literary uses of humor. Perhaps you're drawn to explore the boundaries between poetry and prose. Find more information about our classes and faculty here.

For those of you who seek a remote writing experience, check out our writers retreat at the beautiful Tutka Bay Lodge, led each year by a nationally renowned author.
